Burgaw is a beautiful and charming small town located right in the center of Pender County. The town is known for its scenic backdrops and friendly community. Burgaw was officially incorporated as a town in 1879, after a rich history as a depot alongside the Wilmington & Raleigh Railroad Company. The depot is the oldest in the state and is part of the official North Carolina Civil War Trail. Today Burgaw still bears reminders of its historical past, while still having all the modern facilities for education, industry, and medical care. It provides ample economic opportunities and has easy access to an urban center and all of the amenities that it provides.
The Burgaw Historic District, located in the heart of the town, is full of attractions just waiting to be discovered. Here one can find beautiful antique shops full of treasures waiting to be discovered. The train depot is the oldest building in the district and was built prior to the Civil War. Though recently restored and renovated, the building still maintains its significant historical values. It houses a banquet room, conference room, an incubator kitchen, a large outside dock area and offices, serving as an event center for citizens of the town.
Burgaw is also home to numerous parks that provide residents with access to sports facilities, playgrounds, nature trails, and much more. These parks provide the perfect place to spend time with family and friends, and lend to the great community that Burgaw provides. The Osgood Canal Greenway and Urban Trail provides 2.2 mile loop of asphalt and concrete walking trails that go in and around the central portion of the town limits. It follows the Osgood Canal through town and provides walks through urban areas in downtown Burgaw and wooded areas along the canal. It also connects to the various schools in the area, offering access to parks and playground along the trail. Harrell Memorial Park provides tennis courts that are connected to the park, as well as children’s playground with play equipment suitable for all ages and restrooms within walking distance.
Burgaw is also home to numerous exciting events, such as the famous North Carolina Blueberry Festival. This festival attracts more than 30,000 people from all over the state every year. Pender County ranks second in blueberry production for the entire state, and this special event celebrates that with activities for the whole family.
